The Bible teaches that “God is love” (1 John 4:8), meaning that His character, thoughts, motives, and actions are all based on His own principles of pure, true, unselfish love. God has also expressed His love by giving humanity the Ten Commandments (see Exodus 20; Romans 13:10), which were “written with the finger of God” (Exodus 31:18), and then by sending His own Son Jesus Christ to earth to live out those principles in human flesh (see John 15:10). At the end of His life, Jesus unselfishly paid the ultimate price by dying on a cruel cross for “the sins of the world” (see 1 John 2:2). Sin is breaking God’s law (see 1 John 3:4). Because our ungodly world continues to reject God’s holy law, and to despise the gift of His love, He is now mercifully sending His judgments to awaken humans to their future peril, and to bring them to repentance and faith so they may be saved from sin—before its too late.
“Hear, O earth!” declares the Lord Himself, “Behold, I am bringing
calamity on this people—even the fruit of their thoughts.
Because they have not headed My words, nor My law,
but rejected it.” Jeremiah 6:19 (emphasis added).
